The search for truth is also the search for God. And visa-versa. We see this clearly in the brief but haunting exchange between Jesus and Pilate, just before Christ’s crucifixion:
Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38)
When God draws near to you, so does truth. It is like awaking to an even greater Reality. Imagine not being aware that you are actually asleep until you suddenly awaken and discover you were only dreaming. Such is the experience of being awakened to God. Then you know God’s Truth, and know that you know and cannot forget that you know, even if you continue with your daytime existence in this temporary existence we call life.
God is Ultimate Truth, and God’s truths are imperishable. When God draws near, radiant Light shines in the darkness, which cannot comprehend or overpower it. Jesus Christ not only told us truth, but is God’s Truth for us. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32), and “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Jesus three times called the Holy Spirit, whom He came to give us, “the Spirit of truth” (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13). The Spirit offers us calming clarity and affirming assurance in an anxious world.
When God draws near in prayer, God will indeed set you free from falsehood and fear. Among the truths which God will communicate to you directly, without the need for words, are these: “I am real and with you always… I made you and you are mine… I know you as no other… I love you as no other… I am pleased with you… I will never abandon or reject you… I will take you to Myself, that we may be together forever… Do not fear, for I am greater than the universe and your future is assured in Me.”
God can instantly implant these truths into your soul with a mere breath or tender touch of “the Spirit of truth.” Once you have encountered God’s inviolate truths, your singular task will be to trust in them, as in God.
