Saint Gertrude of Helfta (1256-1302) really did not like to talk about herself, except to indicate how unworthy she was of the many graces God lavished upon her. Her experiences of God were such that the epithet “the Great” came to be added to her name.
Mechthild of Magdeburg (1207-1282/1294) is the most complicated of the three great mystics to arise in Helfta during the thirteenth century, all of whom reporting a heart union with the Heart of Jesus.
