The deepest desire in our hearts, implanted there secretly by the holy, is the desire for God. This is the desire for God and God alone, for union and sweet communion, a desire greater than the desire for God to do this or that for us. The desire for God is described powerfully in the Psalms. Some examples: “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? (42:1-2).
