Take two magnets, possibly off your refrigerator door. Assuming they are positioned positive to negative, as you draw them closer to each other, something quite noticeable happens. A magnetic field comes into existence, which though invisible is nevertheless undeniably real. It seems to arise of itself when the two are brought into proximity. But what is this “electromagnetic field”? Science is still working that one out.
It is of significance that what you can hold in your hands on a much grander scale, turns out to be the same basic force, now called the gravity field between celestial bodies in space, between the earth and its moon, or the sun and its planets. Where would we be without this silent, invisible magnetic field? We would not be at all. Without a gravity field, we would all have flowed away, like astronauts in outer space, with nothing to draw us back together.
Is there another kind of magnetic or gravity field, not between bodies in physical space, but between persons in psychic space? Much is at stake in the answer to this vital – and timely – question. What if we defined “spirit” as that which occurs between persons, like gravity between planets? What if in fact spirit is an invisible field which can come into being between us, under the right circumstances, and which can have for the soul the same kind of living-giving and sustaining power gravity does for our bodies? That is the supposition of this book. I will attempt to justify and explain this unseen field of spirit. I will also define the “Holy Spirit” as the Field of Love between the two other Persons of the Trinity. And since we are made in the image of God, what is between the divine Beloved and the Lover can also come to exist between God and us.
Much is at stake in our recognition of spirit in our day, when the forces of anarchy, meaning literally, “against authority” have become dangerously active. Biblically speaking, “anarchy” is when every man and woman “turns to their own way”; that is, when community spirit, the “we” of mutual life, disappears, like the magnetic field when the magnets pull away from each other. Tragically, this is happening more and more in our day. If we do not recognize and heal our social divisions, we may well finally and completely destroy ourselves. Truly, the health of the spiritual atmosphere between us is as vital to our survival as the health of the physical atmosphere, now under the growing threat of “global warming.”
