Your heart hears as well as sees, but not as your physical ears and eyes. This inner sensing of the heart is called “discernment.” Applied to your relationship to God that means your heart may grasp realities your mind and body will miss. So you must be open and trusting of what your heart senses about God. You already know God, but you cannot realize what you know until God draws near. Then you will awaken to what your heart knew all along. Here is a meditation on this theme:
My heart saw You first,
And best.
Saw You in everything after
It had seen You in nothing – but Yourself.
My heart saw You first,
And most clearly.
Saw You in ways my senses
Could not grasp or respond to.
My heart saw You first,
And most dearly.
Saw You with a washing warmth of love
You brought with You.
My heart saw You first.
And last.
Saw You after everything else faded away –
Even my heart itself,
Only to be reborn in You.
