The most profound hunger and thirst is for God. Too few of us realize this, however. We spend our time and energy on the things which do not really satisfy. As St. Augustine said, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”
HUNGER AND THIRST
You may hunger and thirst
For what you know not;
Vaguely, as if something is missing
Which may not have a name or frame.
You may hunger and thirst
For what you do know,
Something you have already tasted,
Something that has entered into and
Replenished your soul and substance.
Whether named or unnamed,
What you seek is the “Something More”
Which could make all the difference.
The greater your remembrance
The greater your hunger and thirst
For that which you have already ingested.
When you hunger and thirst for meaning and purpose;
When you hunger and thirst for healing and wholeness,
Love and joy,
Goodness and beauty,
Truth and knowledge
Peace and calmness;
When you hunger and thirst for justice and mercy,
Faith and assurance,
Silence and wakefulness,
Rest and re-creation,
You are in truth seeking God,
And what you may finally and fully
Receive only from God,
Your single Source and Center.
You may have to wait for a time
Until your hunger and thirst sufficiently grow,
To recognize what you truly seek:
God and only God
And nothing but God,
Who will fill your emptiness
While granting you another space,
Mutual space, in which
To be safe and secure
From fear and want.
Do not regret your hunger and thirst;
They are God’s twin gifts,
To arouse and guide you
To heaven’s waiting fulfillment.
